Hokie Circles­ remind people to social distance t Hokie Circles­ remind people to social distance through spatial graphics – circles painted on lawns and orange dots on sidewalks. Hokie Circles at the Farmers Market resulted from a student-initiated proposal funded by Virginia Tech’s TECH Together Campaign, a call by the university to solicit ideas from students to prevent spread of COVID-19 and provide comfort to the university community. Instead of conventional signs that are posted on walls or signposts, the team of an architecture student, alumna and faculty proposed to communicate a message through a spatial experience. While preparing to install graphic signs on campus, the team saw an urgent need for social distancing at the farmers market, and approached the market director Ian Littlejohn. Together, they agreed to install bright, fun graphic signage.   The orange dots on sidewalks act as visual cues to maintain a 6-feet distance while waiting in line. The painted circles in the market lawn mark places for individuals, couples and small groups to distance one another. Reflective beads placed on top of the paint make the circles in the lawn shimmer under bright electric light at night. In-kind donation of graphic films and reflective beads were provided 3M. The team members are Joonyoung Kang (Architecture, 2022), Kirat Pandher (Architecture, 2020), and Aki Ishida (Associate Professor).
