210 Weeks Road, Floyd, VA 24091
Mary Predny feels connected to the New River Valley through her farming, gardening and musical talents. In the midst of learning to play the fiddle and banjo she met a fellow musician, which led to a conversation about her interest to resume growing her own food. Soon she was renting some of his land outside of Blacksburg and preparing the soil. Mary, an Illinois native, revived her inherited green thumb and the knowledge she garnered from studying for her Horticulture degree.
Merry Peas came to fruition in 2006 and market patrons have enjoyed non-certified organic produce and flowers ever since. Mary’s success led her to recently purchase 58-acres of half wooded land in Floyd County where she plans to expand her harvest to include fruit. She also hopes to keep company with a few farm animals.
Mary enjoys seeing children at the market get excited about berries she picked the day before from Crow’s Nest. She loves to discuss the varieties of vegetables with customers and learn their preferences. Mary likes to know where her crops are going and who will enjoy them. Once she wondered why two young women bought out her entire beet harvest; when asked, they responded that they were planning to serve the beets at FloydFest, a local musical festival. Mary was gratified to know her beets would be there, even if she could not attend.
