From 2003 to 2015, Jim and I raised beef cattle and laying hens for wholesale customers while managing our full-time careers, me as faculty member at Virginia Tech and software developer, and Jim as a clinical pharmacist. In the fall of 2015, we completed the transition from our pre-retirement careers to becoming full-time farmers. While we have been vendors at the Blacksburg Farmers market since 2012, over the past two years, we have expanded our product offerings with food we prepare in our state-certified kitchen. In addition to 100% grass-fed beef (never any grain feeds) and eggs from pastured hens, we now offer preserved foods and several fermented food products. We also raise a small amount of seasonal produce including asparagus, strawberries, and rhubarb.

Our beef cattle are all born on our farm and thrive there on grass and grass hay until they are harvested at a USDA-inspected facility under strict low-stress humane conditions. To provide the most tender and best taste possible, each carcass is dry-aged before cutting and packaging.

Our laying hens are raised on pasture to complement their diet with grass, bugs, flies, & worms. They also receive raw seasonal garden fruits and vegetables which they love. They have access to the outdoors at all times and have a healthy indoor environment for their egg production. They leave behind their contribution of nitrogen and other nutrients on the pastures that enhance the soil and grasses which our cows appreciate.

Our animals are raised without hormones or antibiotic supplements and without any cruel alterations. Not only are they raised and harvested humanely, but they are provided with a low-stress, safe, and enriched environment suited to their species to enhance their contentment. Although we have not sought organic certification, we use many conservation and organic practices that minimize land tillage and the use of chemicals on our farm.

Our fermented foods such as Kombucha, Sauerkraut, Kimchi and fermented Dill Pickles are popular with our customers. We currently offer 4 flavors of Kombucha (Ginger, Green Tea, Black tea and Decaf Black Tea) by the tumbler and (refillable) pints and growlers at the Blacksburg Farmers Market. In addition to our fermented foods, we also offer seasonal jams, jellies, pickles, relish, and baked items made from home-grown produce from our garden or our neighbors’.

It has long been our goal to supply healthy meat, eggs, produce, and premium-quality homemade products directly to our local customers. Our mission is to:

 Know our customers well and provide them healthy, high-quality, affordable food products.

 Produce our products using good agricultural practices that protect our natural resources.

 Provide loving care and good homes for our animal partners.

Please stop by our stall at the market and introduce yourself. We are at the market Saturdays January–December and Wednesdays April-December. We love getting to know our customers and sharing information about our products. We personally produce all the food products we sell, so we know exactly what’s in every package.
