Curt Laub of the Blacksburg Farmers Market grows his dahlias in raised beds.
What are dahlias?
According to The American Dahlia Society (www.dahlia.org), dahlias are native to Mexico and Guatemala. The tuberous-rooted plants were named after the 18th century Swedish botanist Andreas Dahl.
Due to years of hybridizing, dahlias now come in a wide variety of shapes, sizes and colors. Dahlias may grow from 1 foot to more than 6 feet high. There are pompom, cactus, water lily and anemone flower forms, just to list a few. Blossoms can be as tiny as buttons or as big as dinner plates!
Farmers markets are perfect places to purchase dahlias if you don’t grow your own. “The Dahlia Guy” will be at the Blacksburg Farmers Market from August through October!
